You are right.  A Holy, Just, God cannot hold a person innocent for breaking His laws...He put them there for a reason.  See, God can't allow sin into heaven, He can't stand sin.  So you say, "Well, what then, who can go to heaven??!!" (Keep Reading and you will know) God gave us free will to choose.  We chose to break His law and therefore we have condemned OURSELVES to hell. In fact, if we choose not to believe we are condemned already! See what the Bible says in John 3:18: "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
 

   The Bible says in Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us–ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."

  We CANNOT do ANYTHING to erase our OWN sin.  Ephesians 2:8-9  [8]"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast."  We are not and can not be saved by works...once we believe, then we are created in Christ Jesus unto good works.  We are only saved by faith in Jesus Christ.
