The Day Age Idea

This theory was invented as a "safety" because scientists stated that the earth was billions of years old.  Since the Bible clearly teaches differently, one would expect to find major problems with these theories, and one does.

The Day Age theory states that each day of the six days creation were either millions or billions of years.  Some may even say that each day was 1000 years.

Just before we get in deep, I would like us to be sure of something.  the Bible says that all Scripture is inspired by God.  Look at 2 Timothy 3:16:

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"

What is ALL Scripture?  Is Genesis 1:1 Scripture?  Yes.  Is Revelation 22:21 Scripture?  Yes! What about everything in between, is it all considered Scripture?  Sure it is!  So then all the words of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation are GIVEN BY GOD.  So GOD is the author.  So what the Bible says is right...right?  Right!!!!

Well, what does the Bible say?  Many will point to a verse in 2 Peter and use it to back the claim that each creation day was more than just a 24 hour day.  This verse is found in Chapter 3 of 2 Peter verse 8.

"But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years,..."

This verse alone may look as though it supports the Day Age Idea.  However, is this how we are to learn from the Bible?  By taking out one verse?  No, not at all.  We need to first read the verse in CONTEXT of the entire chapter.  Second we need to compare the verse with the rest of the teaching of Scripture.

I have noticed in speaking with supporters of the Day Age Idea that they quote the above text and end there.  But is that the entire verse? No!  Here is the WHOLE verse:

"But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."

Now, if a day is a thousand years and a thousand years is just one day...then what is a day? 1000 years... but that 1000 years is just a day!!!  Do you see the circle?  How they cancel each other out?

But what is Peter talking about?  Is he speaking about creation? Well lets look at the verse in context: (I will add the entire chapter for the sake of this discussion)

1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us–ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 ¶ Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

It is clear that Peter is NOT writing about creation but the 2nd coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Peter is telling us the obvious, the Lord is coming back at ANY time.  That time means nothing to the Lord, He will come back, maybe even before you reach the end of this sentence!!

So we know Peter is not talking about creation...it is not mentioned anywhere in the chapter!  Peter is actually quoting the book of Psalms.  Check it out... Psalm 90:4:

"For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night."

Now a thousand years are not just a day, but as a watch in the night.  An Old Testament watch was 3 hours.

And really, using this verse would say that each day of creation was 1000 years therefore becoming a 6000 year creation...still not millions or billions of years that are needed for the Day Age Idea.

But this is not all!  There are major problems with this theory.  The first is that you cannot believe in a world wide flood as in the days of Noah!  Why?  Well, the Day Age Idea makes room for the billions of years that we supposedly "see" in the layers of the earth.  All the fossils and layers of rock. If there was a world wide flood about 4400 years ago it would have completely destroyed the "Geologic Column" and all the fossils inside!!  So believers of the Day Age Idea must say that it was just a local flood! This is clearly NOT what the Bible teaches.

But that's not all.  We know the sun was not created until the 4th day.  Or if you believe in the Day Age Idea... the 4th period (4th million or billionth year).  We also know the trees were made on the 3rd day or "millionth/billionth" period.  Herein lies the problem... With no sun until the 4th day... or 4th period... how in the world did the trees, plants and flowers survive for millions/billions of years until the sun was created? Not to mention the insects being created millions/billions of years after the flowers!  Well, in the earth we see symbiotic relationships between insects and certain trees, flowers and plants, meaning that these both NEED each other to survive.  Without one you cannot have the other.  This proves a literal 6 day creation!!!  Think about it... can the trees, plants and flowers survive for one literal day without the sun? Yes, in fact tonight the sun will go down and the trees and plants will not die!  The Bible is just FINE the way it is written...don't mess with it and add interpretations!!!  There is one interpretation... as it is written!

Genesis 1:5 "And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day."

Exodus 20:11 "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."

How could God have said it any clearer than that?? In fact Exodus 20:11 is not just inspired, but inscribed!  God inscribed that verse in solid rock with His own finger for Moses!!

And the worst!  Believing in millions and billions of years BEFORE Adam means that there was death in the world BEFORE Adam!  This is a heresy!  This would mean that God brought death into the world.  But the Bible is CLEAR that MAN brought death into the world!

1 Corinthians 15:21 "For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead."

Romans 5:12 "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:"

It is dangerous to think God brought death into the world!  God did not bring death, but man, and that man Adam.  And the Last Adam Jesus Christ abolishes it...if you choose to accept His payment for your sin. (Click the underlined to read more)

Why trust in man's teaching?  Scientists may teach the universe is billions of years old, but they have been wrong in the past, they can be wrong now.  But this is one group of scientists.  There is another group, a group that believe the universe is just 6000-7000 years old.  Ph.D. Geologists, Chemists, Paleontologists, Archaeologists, Biologists, Bio-chemists, Astronomers...etc. etc.  There are thousands.  In fact, a non-exhaustive list will soon be on the website.  You can find one on the following site: www.creationontheweb.org

The whole point is: Don't put your trust in man or his contraptions! Put your trust and faith in God Almighty who cannot lie and told us clearly that He created everything in 6 days, not millions/billions of years!!
